NFL AFC East Handicapping

NFL AFC East Handicapping

Some might say it’s the most interesting division in football, while others might call it “the division Tom Brady used to play in.” No matter what you want to call the AFC East, just don’t call it boring. Here’s some AFC East handicapping tips.

The AFC East, while certainly Bradyless for the foreseeable future, is still a relevant part of the NFL landscape. The 2020 NFL season may very well see some of the most shocking retributive play we’ve seen in a long time, especially in New England.

Picking a clear winner this year is a little more challenging, but as you’ll see with our little examination of the AFC East, picking a clear-cut winner is not as easy as it seems.

Who’s the Best?

Well, this is an easy one. It need not be explored much further. The New England Patriots are far and away the best team in this division. While squads like the Buffalo Bills have gotten a little better, they are still not even close to the level of excellence and consistency that the Patriots bring to the table.

Aside from having the best coach in the division in Bill Belichick, arguably the greatest coach of all time, the Patriots also have the best quarterback in the division. Cam Newton of Carolina Panthers fame has made the transition to filling big shoes.

There is no doubt that the folks in New England are still getting used to seeing Cam at the helm and not No. 12, but it doesn’t mean that they can’t still have success. Cam plays a big part in AFC East handicapping though. But will they be worth betting at the best NFL sportsbooks?

This was demonstrated in their opening win over the Miami Dolphins. The Patriots used Cam’s size and versatility as an athlete to eventually pound the Dolphins into the dirt.

Despite the strong showing by the Patriots in their first game, look for them to encounter more turmoil as the season advances.

The Patriots will take on the Seattle Seahawks on the road in Week 2. While Cam has historically had some impressive battles in Seattle, it may be too much for him and the Pats to overcome. But as the season unfolds, expect the Patriots to pull away with the division lead.

The X-Factor

Of all the teams in the division, there is perhaps no X-factor greater than the Buffalo Bills. With potential superstar QB Josh Allen at the helm, the jury is still out.

While many critics have already cast him aside as yet another overrated QB prospect to play for the Bills, Allen is a rare dual-threat talent with some legitimate star power. But his confounding ability to create turnovers out of thin air is preventing the Bills from reaching their full potential.

A strong performance in Week 1 propelled the Bills to a quick 1-0 start over the Jets. However, as they take on fellow division rival Miami in Week 2, coming in as six-point chalk, don’t be surprised if we see them stumble.

Who Wins and Who Loses

The Patriots will pull away and win, the Bills will trail but not by much. It’ll be a fight at the bottom between the Jets and Dolphins, with the Dolphins performing marginally better.
